Abstract
The article analyzes theoretical principles and Ukrainian specificity of political participation,
the role of civic activity in the process of the political system democratization. An attempt was
made to specify the concept of social capital in the context of contemporary Ukrainian realities.
The article substantiates the position that quantitative indicators of civic activity are not decisive
in the processes of democratization. It is found out that Ukraine has a strong social capital.
However, stimulated by it civic activity does not contribute to the democratization
of the political system, because of the non‐institutionalized nature of political participation.
