| dc.description.abstract | The need for greening the economy and societal development are discussed in the paper. The theoretical approaches of environmental economics, ecological economics, green economics and physical economy are compared and their institutionalizations as scientific disciplines are described. During the transition to the sustainable development it is important to follow the idea of societal progress. We analyzed the main indicators which were used already internationally to measure the progress of society and concluded that GPI (Genuine Progress Indicator) had several advantages in comparison with the others. They were integral indicators which considered economic, environmental, and social dimensions including many non-market values. In comparison with GDP it takes into account more than twenty issues of increasing or decreasing the human well-being. It was already tested in Australia, Germany, France, Netherlands, and the USA at national and regional levels and could be considered as an alternative to GDP. To build sustainable and desirable future we should change dominated traditional system of economic development which ignores the needs of ecological sustainability and social justice by redesigning strategies, institutions, policy instruments, and vision of societal progress. | en |
