    The article is devoted to revealing the essence of blockchain technology. The blockchain is defined as a digital, decentralized and evenly distributed database. The blockchain and related technological changes in the economic system are considered. A new industrial revolution is already breaking into the world of predictable business models based on centralization and financial capitalism. It is considered that the most revolutionary aspect of blockchain technology is that it can run software in a secure and decentralized way. With blockchain, software programs no longer need to be deployed on a centralized server: they can be run on a peer-to-peer network that is not controlled by any one party. The basic principles underlying the technology are identified. It is proved that blockchain technology promotes the emergence of new forms of organizations that are not only dematerialized but also decentralized.
