The purpose of the article is to determine the features of international legal protection of the Arctic environment, taking into account the specificity of the abovementioned region. The scientific novelty lies in the elucidation of modern trends of the formation and development of the Arctic international legal regime for environmental protection. Сonclusions. International legal protection of the Arctic environment is carried out on the basis of universal and regional international treaties, which regulate the relations of states in various areas of environmental cooperation. Despite the large number of universal international treaties on environmental issues, the only regional international agreement that governs the relations of the Arctic states in this area is the Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears of 1973. The Arctic Council is the main international organization in the northern polar region, created to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development in the Arctic, that coordinates the activities of the Arctic states. Since the science of international law does not have a common point of view on improving the international legal regime of environmental protection in the Arctic region, the following main approaches to it should be identified on the basis of analysis of modern legal and international legal literature: 1) the conclusion of regional agreements concerning the protection of separate natural objects; 2) the signing a framework agreement with protocols in the field of environmental protection in the Arctic; 3) the conclusion of an universal international treaty, taking as a model the Treaty of Antarctica, which would regulate environmental issues in the region; 4) the adaptation of universal norms of international environmental law to the Arctic region. In our opinion, among the proposed options concluding a universal international agreement in the Arctic would contribute to solving many problematic issues in the region, including issues in the field of environmental protection.
