Abstract
The paper examines AdTech as the technological infrastructure embedded in digital marketing and argues that this layer largely determines the allocation of advertising attention through inventory trading rules, data access, and algorithmic optimization. It clarifies the conceptual boundaries between digital marketing, digital media, and AdTech by linking them to actual market mechanisms of buying and selling advertising inventory and to the roles of key demand- and supply-side actors.
Based on a critical synthesis of academic and industry sources, the study systematizes the evolution of online advertising from early direct placements to the programmatic ecosystem, where impression-level decisions are made in real time. It analyzes the functional roles of DSPs, SSPs, and ad exchanges within a millisecond-scale decision chain and explains how standardized bid request/bid response messaging enables interoperability at scale. Auction mechanisms are discussed with an emphasis on the market-wide shift toward first-price auctions and its practical implications for bidding strategies, model calibration, and transaction prices.
The paper classifies major digital advertising formats and demonstrates that a format’s «openness» is driven primarily by the trading mode and the availability of user signals rather than by the creative form itself. It further reviews how privacy regulation in the EU and the US reshapes data collection and activation practices and substantiates the role of consent infrastructure (CMPs and consent-transfer standards) as a crucial interoperability layer between users and the advertising supply chain. In the context of the post-cookie transition, the study summarizes the main alternatives to third-party cookies — including first-party data, login-based identifiers, data clean rooms, and modern ML-enabled contextual methods — and shows how changing signal availability shifts market power toward owners of transaction and intent data, notably in retail media.
Finally, the paper provides an applied interpretation for the agri-food sector. It distinguishes two dominant trajectories — B2B export-oriented communication and B2C retail-driven promotion — and explains how they utilize AdTech differently in terms of tools, KPI logic, and privacy-compliance risks
